Suggestions on how to apply for Certificate of Indian Blood

I'm not an expert on applying for a Certificate of Indian Blood - I've never had to do it myself. Nor would I be able to, because, although I undoubtably have Native American blood, it's too far back to mean anything. So when I was asked to help two sisters with their request, I had to apply certain knowledge that I already had, and guess at the rest.

Find out what I did, by reading the post on my personal blog "Searching for Native American Roots".

Evangelist for African Ancestored Genealogy

George Geder, self-described "evangelist for African ancestored genealogy", posted to his blog a link titled "Where are the African Americans in Santa Fe?" This article is his debut column in Examiner.com, a website that emphasizes local information.

In the article, Geder notes that there are not many African Americans in Santa Fe, pointing out census statistics that show only 0.7% of Santa Fe is African American. However, he goes on to describe how African Americans enriched Santa Fe's history for over 400 years.

Another link on his post is for an article that he wrote for Shades of the Departed. In additon to being a genealogist, Geder is a photo restoration artist. In the article, he describes how to do what he calls a "background check": making the background of a photograph black and white, while leaving the foreground subject color. He uses Photoshop to create this effect, which mutes the "busy" background that can be found on some photos.

Volunteers Needed for New Mexico Death Certificate Project

ANNOUNCEMENT:

How would you like to be a part of the New Mexico Death Certificate Project? The project is ready to go and volunteers are needed. You can work one day a week or more - whatever fits your schedule. Some of the work will be done at Special Collections Library and some will be able to be done at home. Hugh Bivens is the contact person for this project but is looking for another person to coordinate volunteer schedules, etc.

Hugh is at Special Collections Library every Tuesday and Thursday so you can contact him there to get more information.

The software has been developed and tested. Volunteers are now needed to move death certificate images from microfilm rolls to digital format. This involves operating a microfilm machine that you may already have used it in your personal research. Training will be provided to make you comfortable in the operation of the machine. Since having New Mexico Death Certificates available on our website is mainly going to help people searching for their New Mexico ancestors, it seems to make sense that NMGS take an active role in getting this done. Talk to Hugh Bivens or Gail Rassmussen regarding the project if you are interested in helping . The phone number at the Albuquerque Special Collections Library is (505) 848-1376.

The Albuquerque Special Collection Library website is http://www.cabq.gov/library/specol.html

The Founder Effect and New Mexican Hispanics

Today's Albuquerque Journal has an article about a certain founder effect that is found in Hispanic families from Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado's San Luis Valley. The illness is recombinant 8 syndrome, a genetic disease that causes mental retardation and internal deformations and defects.

A "founder effect" is a genetic mutation passed on through the descendants of a small population that intermarries. For example, founder effects are prevalent in Spanish New Mexico and French Quebec due to the small amount of families that settled those areas in their early histories.

Other founder effects mentioned in the article include OPMD, a type of muscular dystrophy, and cavernous cranial malformation, a type of brain defect. To read more about this disease, click on the link below:

NM County Genealogy Links to return ... soon ....

Many of you who are following the NMGS "New Mexico Genealogy Links" that have been posted regularly on this blog may have noticed that I haven't posted new county links for about three weeks.

Alas, work has gotten in the way. I began teaching again three weeks ago, and have not had the time or energy to post these articles that usually take an hour to two hours to create.

But, don't worry. I will be working on new county link posts this weekened. I hope to be caught up within a week.

Keep you eyes out for new links....
